An OCD Intern – Week 2

The clients I was on this week were both retirement fund audits. One was a 401K, the other a 403b. The sample creations I completed the week before for 401Ks would certainly help me understand the data and my tasks more comprehensively.  I was charged with performing eligibility, participation, yield, and allocation testing. All these tests would be completed with Excel, and I was appreciative of my Management Systems professor who challenged me to better understand Excel functions.  I spent the week going through payroll binders, employee files and retirement fund information to confirm compliance and accuracy. I ensured there were no significant variances in the information.  One thing I have learned at O’Connor and Drew in just three weeks with the firm, is I am not a typical intern. I am not making coffee runs and given minimal tasks as a typical intern might expect to be doing. I am treated as a new hire staff accountant, and am given the ability to actually see what the day to day life of an accountant consists of.  Being able to actually feel like I am contributing to the success of the firm is what I appreciate most about O’Connor and Drew.
