What was I going to do? Was I going to like accounting? Was I going to like the staff? All these questions and more ran through my head as I walked into the building on the first day of my internship at O’Connor and Drew. I was finally prepared to develop relevant experience in accounting after three years of college.
When entering the office I was shown to a conference room where the interns would be training. We started off, as you might expect, by filling out new employee paperwork. After that was completed we transitioned into training. Rebecka showed us how to use Engagement, Document and other systems we would be using throughout our internship. We learned how to check our work emails and were provided with the summer schedule. We were taken to Legal Sea Food for lunch with a few staff members who shared their experiences with us. I spent the afternoon at my desk, going through the training binder and reviewing the systems.
The rest of my first week was spent self-training, researching and organizing. I continued to study and learn the different systems and practices. I researched clients that I was going to be working on in the coming weeks. I examined their past financial statements, sampling completed and other data to better comprehend what I was going to be doing. Seeing ratios I learned in my accounting classes actually being utilized was encouraging. I put dates that I was going to be out on clients in my calendar and set up my office. Throughout the week I was given some minor tasks to complete, such as scanning and uploading. Overall I certainly enjoyed my first week as an intern and am looking forward to the rest of the summer.
